Colab m 2016 Semester Two Applications Open

WhyDev and Monash University are excited to announce the third round of Colab m. Applications are now open for Semester Two 2016.

What is it all about?

The vision for Colab m is to connect university students with the development sector and to enable them to build one-to-one relationships with professionals currently working in the sector. Having a mentor is an invaluable resource; mentors can provide students with guidance and support whilst sharing their expertise and experience. Together mentors and mentees have the opportunity to talk through the ever-evolving and complex landscape of development both in Australia and internationally.

So far, over 100 postgraduate students and development professionals from around the world have participated in the program. Here’s what a couple of them had to say:

“I enjoyed sharing my experiences with my mentee. They were interested in hearing about the field and posed challenging and thought provoking questions for me to consider.” -Colab m Mentor

“Being assigned a mentor and managing to build a solid relationship with them makes me feel less nervous about the sector. It is very important to be connected with someone who can be a friend and a supporter as well as a magnificent source of knowledge.” -Colab m Mentee

The program consists of eight modules that are completed over 14 weeks. Based on research, the modules have been designed to cover topics ranging from skills and employment to networking and well-being.

Objectives of the Colab mentoring program include:

  • To develop communication, planning, interpersonal and reflexive skills;
  • To learn more about the particular sector you would like to work in, building your tacit knowledge;
  • To improve your ability to network;
  • To build a sustainable and long-term relationship between the mentor and mentee.

Why mentoring?

The value of a mentor as a guide, teacher and supporter is widely recognised. A mentor listens, is honest and provides relevant and appropriate support for professional development and career planning.

Although currently only available to Master of International Development Practice students from Monash University, it is the vision of both organisations that the program will eventually be extended to university students and development practitioners around the world. However, if you are a professional working in the sector, then we welcome you to apply to be a mentor.

Being a mentor is a hugely rewarding experience. Not only do you offer valuable insights for your mentee, but also you can learn lots from your interaction with them. You can play a part in helping to shape the future generation of development practitioners. One mentor explains:

“I valued the opportunity to share my experience to assist my mentee to get a clearer understanding of what is out there and how to get it. Having a mentee also encouraged me to reflect on my experiences.”

Applications are now open until 11:59pm AEDT 6th July 2016 for both mentee and mentor positions. For further information and enquires please contact Michelle Ferns at
